The Strategic Gift
It can be very difficult to buy a present for somebody who has excellent taste when you are the poor relation. The trick is that you need to find something that is of very high quality that can be bought at an affordable price. I travel a lot, and I try my best to bring back birthday presents for my friends and family that I purchase abroard. Chess pieces are something that you wouldn’t think of at first, but can tick all of the boxes for a perfect gift.I was recently in Taiwan and needed to find something for my very wealthy sister in law. She has a lovely house and appreciates the ’objet d’art’. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to find anything that could actually compete with the things that she already owned, but I came across a vendor in the night market that had the most wonderful selection of chess pieces that I have ever seen.It was obvious that some of them were local and some of them were imported from other countries in South East Asia, as they were all clearly hand crafted in local woods or jade. I decided to go for the more expensive jade pieces and only buy the kings and queens because that was all that I could afford! My sister in law absolutely loved them and they were great as they were both an ornamental and functional gift. It also helps set a precedent for further gifts of unique chess pieces from around the world.
