Pay as they go
What is the best gift to give your loved ones at the moment? With summer upon us and everyone running off on holiday it would be easy to think that the most useful things to buy would be swimwear or beach accessories. However ask yourself what’s the one thing that people use the most when on holiday? The answer may surprise you, but believe it or not its mobile phones and accessories.
A report published by the BBC in April shows that the average mobile phone user spends nearly £500 a year on their bills, most of the time not realising that they don’t actually need to spend that much. Everyone is so paranoid about going over their ‘talk time'limit that they end up investing in price plans that give them more free minutes, but charges them more over an extended period of time. The majority particularly get caught out when on holiday. Perhaps this year the best gift you can give a friend or loved one for the summer is a new sim card or price plan for their phone.
As most holiday makers want to upload and share their photos instantly with friends back home, the best price option would be payg mobile broadband. Getting the right deal could save a fortune on roaming and data charges and there are many companies who are able to offer competitive prices that undercut a lot of the major providers like BT and Orange.
With Smartphones becoming the new phone of choice it’s worth remembering that whatever data package you select as a gift, make sure that it allows for a high amount of internet time. Your friend or loved one won’t thank you if they return home to a massive bill due to exceeding their data limits. Again, pay as you go is the better option here as it can alleviate the problem of going over your limit – once you’re out of money, you’re out of money unless you top up. It really does keep you aware of how much you’re spending so can be invaluable.

If a new phone or sim card is out of your reach price wise then the best gift to give your friend or loved one, would be information on where to get the best deals. Simply sending them links to deals you’ve found online or elsewhere shows that you have put a lot of thought into them, even if you couldn’t afford to get the phone or sim card yourself. If that still doesn’t seem like enough for you then one other thing you can do is to swap phones. If you’re smart enough, then you’ve probably already got a good price plan available for going abroad. Do your friend or loved one a favour and offer to lend them your sim card for the duration of their holiday. Again it shows a lot of thought.
Phones and sim cards may not be the first things that flash into people’s minds when buying presents and gifts, but they can be the most practical and useful.
